September 13 Update:
Well what a HUGE month it's been so far!
One of my favourite ever artists Wendy Rule, has released her new album 'The Wolf Sky', embracing once again, the powerfully dramatic & dark sounds of her debut 'Zero'. Spell-binding.
Various sounds like Beth Gibbons fronting Moloko with a touch of Kosheen and Nine Inch Nails thrown in. Exquisitely awesome.
'Crazy Itch Radio' by Basement Jaxx sounds like a global party. Mad, melodic mayhem. And right up my alley.
Timberlake ups the funk for 'FutureSex/LoveSounds'. Pulsating.
Hellogoodbye - Well Hello boys...You catchy little electrock darlings!
Madeleine Peyroux is a slice of simple joy in a cake of overproduced noise. Soothing.
African/American/Filipino model - Cassie comes out of nowhere with this irresistably subversive dose of hypnotic R'n'B.
'Continuum' (John Mayer) is perfect for that dreamy Sunday morning sleep-in, wrapped in the arms of your lover. Tender.
James Morrison's got soul man!
Kasabian's newie sounds like Shaun Ryder on speed. Oh hang on - when ever is the Happy Mondays frontman NOT on speed?! Rockin out on the dancefloor has never been so fun...
Sneaky Sound System - A slicker, slinkier Rogue Traders.
ESG - minimal, old-skool, stripped-back chic-hop.
~~~
Azam Ali : The incredible voice of Niyaz and Vas branches out with her most ambitious solo release to date. 'Elysium for the Brave' weaves Ali's many influences into a haunting tapestry of atmospheric rock, electronic and global sounds. Stunning.
Mo-Shic's 'Salamat' - What a find! I discovered this little gem in a second-hand music store. Two discs - one progressive, the other downbeat...and all of it lush. Astonishingly good.
~~~
William Shatner's 'Has Been' - Irreverent, lucid, funny, sad, honest and frank. A true surprise from 'ol Captain Kirk.
'Beyond The Sea' film soundtrack - Is there anything Kevin Spacey can't do?!
~~~
'C.R.A.Z.Y.' - Loved the Bowie bits, the strong mother-son bond, the religious splashes, the coming-of-age/cumming out plot...but what had me most teary, was the moving story of a young man desperately seeking the love of a disappointed father.
'Lady In The Water' - Magical, mythical, enchanting & powerful - made in a language I understood totally. M. Night Shyamalan's a genius.
September 19 Update:
Fergie debuts surprisingly high with her first solo effort 'The Dutchess'. Sounding like a cross between Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera & Missy Elliott...it's fun, dynamic and eclectic.
Scissor Sisters proclaim their return with the uber-glam 'Ta-Dah'. Dancing whimsicals ahoy!
Early Kim Wilde songs always remind me of when I was very young and had no idea about anything. Plus, you just gotta love a rock blonde who didn't mind flirting with electro.
'Step Up' is funky R'n'B/Hip-hop at its most dancey. So so def-inately stompin'!
Jenny Wilson is a slightly kooky affair, yet her songs exude a certain undefinable warmth ~ with slight nods to Roisin Murphy, Beth Gibbons, Joni Mitchell and even Jake Shears.
LeToya (ex-Destiny's Child) is a lot smoother than her more famous counterpart - Beyonce. Whereas 'B-Day' is mostly all bells & whistles, 'LeToya' comes across sexier and classier, thanks to its assured subtlety. Sometimes less is definately more...
The Rapture - elektropunkish, Cure-lite, indie/dance/pop...complete with cowbells. Yay.
~~~
McCalmont & Butler's 'The Sound of...' simply soars, and floats, and stuns, and rocks, and soothes... And God, THAT voice.
~~~
Jesse McCartney - so not cool but oh so catchy. The lost backstreet boy...
There's just something so damn primal about Wonderland Avenue's 'White Horse'. A perfectly intoxicating soundtrack for a wickedly filthy sex session!
Gabriel & Dresden featuring Molly Bancroft - The sound of Sarah McLachlan fronting Evanescence at an exclusive discotheque...
'Starlight' (Muse) sounds like the Scissor Sisters on really good acid. And that can only be a good thing...
September 27 Update:
Enigma return with their outstanding and cosmically-themed 'A Posteriori' ~ One foot into the great beyond, with the other tapping respectfully to the sound of their earlier masterpieces.
Hybrid : If every star in the night sky was given a musical instrument, thus giving birth to the ultimate, cinematic, universal orchestra...it would be the sound of Hybrid. This is what galaxies dance to. Brooding, trippy, dark & intense...An epic electronic symphony.
Peter Bjorn And John - combines elements of Morrissey, New Order, The Essex Green, Belle & Sebastian, Mercury Rev and The Beach Boys. And it all somehow works. Wonderfully.
Janet Jackson's back - and thankfully this time with a pulse. Though she still can't get anywhere near the brilliance of 'If'.
~~~
It's all about Enigma this week. The Remix Collection is simply a luxurious listen. Enigmatic Obsession was created by the co-producer of Enigma and is just as luscious. Perfect for that long, hot bath surrounded by tea-light candles...
~~~
Paolo Nutini's 'Last Request' gave me goosebumps on the first listen. And THAT chorus...
Bob Sinclar's 'Rock This Party' samples C&C Music Party. Nuff said.
The Egg vs David Guetta - Scrambled, fried, but never boiled...this is one tasty number.
Princess Superstar - Filthy, funny, cheeky, clever...Back from the future to titillate us all in the present. Trashtastic!
~~~
'The Devil Wears Prada' was fun, biting, sweet, hilarious and hugely entertaining. Streep was perfect as Runway's chief editor Miranda Priestly. And watching Hathaway's transformation from beautiful duckling to ugly swan was a sheer joy. Extra kudos for the TWO Madonna songs used in the film! Absolutely fabulous dahhhhling...
