Spotlight On:

Damien Rice - '9'

Rice is an Irishman, blessed with a deep and intelligent storytelling ability and a delivery of almost unrivalled passion. He stunned us with the amazing 'O' (which made #2 on my Top Fave Albums chart last year), which spawned the unforgettable 'The Blower's Daughter'.

Four years of waiting has been definately worth it. '9' is another slowburner: needs time to absorb, but when it sinks in it's rewarding. This earnest, melancholy beast requires a particular mood, if not sets one.

Ultimately, '9' has all the hallmarks of perfection for what it is: songs that ache and tug and move you with sadness, confusion, frustration, love & hate as they take hold.

First song is 'Nine Lives' - a ballad of measured passion; floating with delicate piano and crying cello. Offsider Lisa Hannigan provides tender harmonies on this and many other tracks.

This time around, Rice also adds anger and spit to the mix with the almost psychotic climax of 'Rootless Tree' and the Jeff Buckley-esque frenzy of 'Me, My Yoke and I', while 'Elephant' and 'Accidental Babies' may be the year's most beautiful ballads.

A modern-day genius. And a heart-wrenching, impassioned second album. Emotional, powerful and deeply affecting.

November 8 Update:

'Permanent Evolutions' - Remixes, unreleased tracks and rare film music. An elegant, dreamlike journey... The new album from ARIA nominated atmospheric instrumentalists All India Radio.

John Legend - Classy, soulful & sophisticated. From existentialist retro psy-rock, to funky neo-soul, to wistful ballads, to contemporary R&B, 'Once Again' is once again an impressive triumph.

Architecture In Helsinki - A remixed version of their previous album 'In Case We Die'. Features remixes by Hot Chip, Jeremy Dower, 33hz, Dat Politics, New Buffalo, DJ Mehdi and many more.

Acoustic 2 - Featuring Peter Bjorn And John, Beth Orton, Emiliana Torrini, Martha Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Mazzy Star, Little Birdy, Dan Kelly, David Bowie, The Sleepy Jackson, Ash Grunwald, and Moloko amongst others.

Jamiroquai - Seventeen greatest hits including two new songs...the glistening disco-shiny 'Runaway' and the filthy-swaggering 'Radio'. Also includes a 10-track Bonus Remix CD.

Yo La Tengo - A wonderful, intimate love letter to retro-pop and its many subterranean offshoots, a riot of style, bound together by warmth and wit...

Guy Sebastian - Inspired, energetic & diverse. From rasta-tinged reggae, to jazz, to funk-rock, to cosmic-pop, to inspirational ballads...this is the perfect musical playground for Sebastian's remarkably clear and soulful voice.

Jay~J - Om Records-style, uplifting house music.

P. Diddy - The world's most sharply dressed rapper hangs with his posse...featuring such guests as Timbaland, will.i.am, The Neptunes, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, Nicole Scherzinger, Ciara, Cee-lo, Brandy, Mary J. Blige and Jamie Foxx.

~~~
Susumu Yokota - Powerfully emotional, sublime & transcendental...bears comparison with Emo's finest 70s recordings. An outstanding, uber-chilled, electronic masterpiece. Cool, calm and euphoric. It's obvious Yokota is on a completely different plane to his peers.
~~~

My Depeche Mode back catalogue is now complete. 'Music For The Masses' contains the ace hits - 'Strangelove', 'Never Let Me Down Again' & 'Behind The Wheel'. 'Some Great Reward' includes 'People Are People', 'Master And Servant' & 'Somebody'. 'Black Celebration' includes 'Stripped', 'A Question Of Lust' & 'A Qustion Of Time'. The true pioneers of electro-goth-tronic synth-pop... These new additions will sit nicely alongside my eight other Depeche Mode studio albums.

I bought Phil Collins' '...Hits' purely for 'In The Air Tonight'...spine-tingling stuff. Everytime those drums kick in, I have the aural equivalent of an orgasm!

dios malos - A warm mix of blissful Californian pop, slacker rock & fuzzed-out psychedelia. An exquisite blend of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Neil Young, Weezer, The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. Spaced out, dreamily textured indie-pop. Multi-layered, sophisticated, playful and sorta bizarre.

~~~
'The Departed' - Typical Scorsese : violent, nervous-funny, jarring, tense, fast-paced and fascinating. Not my usual cup of blood...but I did enjoy this.
Damien Rice - Extraordinary, moving, intense, stunning and mesmerising. See above post - 'Spotlight On:'
Depeche Mode - 'The Best Of : Volume 1' includes the hits 'Personal Jesus', 'Just Can't Get Enough' and 'Dream On'. Also features the new song 'Martyr' (a current UK Top 20 hit).
Shakespears Sister - Contains new reworked versions of 'You're History', 'Dirty Mind' and the stunning 'Stay', as well as rare tracks from their later albums.
November 22 Update:
InTheMix'06 - Mixed by Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl) and Ivan Gough (TV Rock). Features tracks and remixes by Trentemoller, Roger Sanchez and Princess Superstar. A unique dancefloor journey through mean and sultry house, peppered with warm pulsing minimal techno, off-ramp vocals and taut beats. An eclectic, classy and altogether unexpected mix. Super stylish.
Cherish - Sassy, sexy, saucy R&B...a funky fusion of Destiny's Child, En Vogue and Cassie (quadrupled). Exquisitely produced.
Kaskade - Intoxicating, love-laden, West coast house. Polished.
Ministry Of Sound : The 2007 Annual - Brimming with the year's most massive and hottest bona-fide club hits...Featuring Basement Jaxx, Bob Sinclar, The Presets, The Similou, Kaskade, Tonite Only, Craig Obey, David Guetta etc. An electro-filled, anthemic mish-mash.
Craig Obey - The sound of a mortal trying to tame the forceful goddess Elektra. She obeys. But only just.
Young Divas - Paulini, Ricki-Lee Coulter, Kate DeAraugo & Emily Williams revive such gay classics as 'What A Feeling', 'Woman In Love' & 'Searchin'. Also contains the two hits 'This Time I Know It's For Real' & 'Happenin All Over Again'. As camp as a row of tents.
~~~

MIDival PunditZ - Indian music for the new millenium and beyond. A sumptuous hybrid of classical Indian ragas and electro-ambient soundscapes.

Red Buddha - A luxurious mind-trip into world lounge. Exotic, soul-soothing beats for deep contemplation.

Elysian Vibes 3 - Features personal faves Bombay Dub Orchestra, Afterlife with Chris Coco, Bliss, Amanaska, Christopher Goze... Warm, ethereal and floating.

Latin Travels 2 - Seamlessly merges contempory electronic culture with ancient traditions and deep roots. The fire and energy that marks the best Latin music comes through on these tracks...mixing Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and electro/ambient/dance elements. World-dance at its most sizzling.

~~~
Love And Rockets - 'So Alive' was one of the better (& sexier) songs of 1989.
~~~

'The Prestige' - If only I hadn't been made aware (before the film) of the 'Prestige' contained within the film, I may have been genuinely surprised at the outcome and at its many twists and turns. Nevertheless, it was still fascinating and hugely entertaining.

November 27 Update:

Akon - 'Trouble' (from 2003) contains the sexy 'Bonanza (Belly Dancer)' and the '50s doo-wop inspired 'Lonely'. For someone who looks so damn tuff, he sure has the sweetest voice... New album 'Konvicted' is also quite impressive. Am loving 'Smack That' (featuring Eminem). Great house cleaning music.

The Beatles - The soundtrack to the Las Vegas Cirque de Soleil show 'Love' - using all original Beatles recordings. This, the most fab Beatles mixtape ever, is a glorious, technicolour extravaganza of re-invention and pop perfection.

~~~
Karsh Kale - the leading American figure in the Asian Massive movement, infuses the traditional sounds of ancient India with post-millenial electro-dance styles such as trance and drum'n'bass. Blending sarangi, flutes and vocals with hypnotic electronica, Kale's work is a masterful fusion of two cultures - a bridge between India and the Indian diaspora in New York.
Tabla player, musician, producer, DJ and remixer, Karsh Kale has worked with Talvin Singh, DJ Spooky, Bill Laswell, Herbie Hancock, Jah Wobble, Zakir Hussain and The Madras Chamber Orchestra.
'Redesign' ('Realize' remixed) also features mixes by Banco de Gaia & MIDival PunditZ. A stunning talent.
Electric Gypsyland - The freshness, authenticity and sheer excitement of the Balkan sound explodes forth from this album. A global fusion of electronic music producers from the UK, US, Brazil, France and Germany reinterpreting tracks by Balkan Gypsy bands. Funky, fun and mad-ass crazy!
~~~

Chillout Sessions 8 (Ministry Of Sound) - Features Emiliana Torrini, Lior, Tosca, Lemon Jelly, Ian Brown, Jamiroquai, Stereo MCs and Radiohead amongst others...

~~~
'Shortbus' - Fun, freewheeling, warm, humane, bracingly fresh, raucously funny, profoundly emotional and honestly sexy. An engaging study of love and lust; an ode to the joy and sweet release of sex; an exhilarating trip. 'Shortbus' is a sweet, brave and open-hearted work of liberation & generosity that deserves to be widely seen and enjoyed. You simply must see this film!
